Chapter 12

Marriage is hard. My momma always says it takes compromise and effort, especially through the rough times. Dylan and I hadn’t had rough times yet, at least not in our marriage. Sure, we’d struggled while dating, but the parameters are different, as are the rules. Marriage brought a whole new level to the game, and I had absolutely no experience in it.

I tried to work, even made a few client calls, but my mind kept returning to the thought that Dylan set me up to do something he knew was irrelevant.

Why would he do that? Was he trying to make me feel involved? To distract me so I wouldn’t pursue my own investigation? I’d solved a few murders before he did. It wasn’t a secret. Did that bother him? Did he worry about my safety, or was it just his ego? And most importantly, did any of it matter?

Considering the fact that I couldn’t let it go, it obviously mattered to me.

When I needed a clear perspective, I did what any smart woman did. I called my mom.

“Lily! I was just going to call you! Did you hear what those silly old women did today? I got a call from Sally. You know, the lady who cut your hair when you were four and about sent your dad to the hospital because he thought you looked like a boy?”

My momma got Bramblett County’s gossip faster than a hunting dog got its deer.

“Yes, I remember that well. I didn’t grow my hair long again until college. And yes, I know all about Bonnie and Henrietta.”

“Can you believe they got arrested? I might need to have a little sit-down with that husband of yours. Arresting two old ladies like that. And for prostitution, too.”

“It wasn’t Dylan’s call, and they aren’t actually arrested. It was Matthew, and he’s just bringing them in to scare them into making up is all.”

“Oh my. I feel sorry for those deputies, then. I’ve been around those two when they fight, and it’s a sight to see, that’s for sure.”

She could go on for hours if I let her. “Momma, I’m having a little, I don’t know, thing with Dylan.”

“A thing? What kind of thing? You mean like an argument?”

“Not exactly an argument, but he did something and it’s really bothering me. Has Daddy ever done something that at first you thought was good but then realized he wasn’t doing what you thought he was doing?”

“Sweetie, you’re going to have to make more sense than that if you want me to help you.”

“You heard about Alice Crowder, right?”

“That poor woman. God bless her. She was sweet as could be.”

“Dylan thinks her car was stolen by this theft thing, and he asked me to—"

“They took her car too? That’s just awful.”

“Momma, please.”

“Oh yes, go on, sweetie.”

“Yes, someone took her car, and Dylan asked me to confirm a story from a woman at the outlet mall. She called for the car to be towed.”

“Dylan asked you to work with him? That’s a big step for you two, and it’s not a step I like.
